A Bench of Hope, Shoreham Academy Unveils Suicide Prevention Bench in Powerful Ceremony

Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex

A moving and emotional ceremony took place today at Shoreham Academy, as the school community gathered for the unveiling of a Suicide Prevention Bench, installed in collaboration with Legend on the Bench.

Our bench serves not only as a place to sit and reflect but as a beacon of hope. Inscribed with crisis helplines and embedded with a QR code for immediate access to support services, it is a constant reminder that someone is always listening.

A Day to Remember

The unveiling was a truly wonderful occasion, attended by staff, local councillors, fundraisers, students, and supporters of the cause.

Leading the moment were two of the driving forces behind bringing the bench to Shoreham Academy, Bernie and Claire, both watched on with pride as their dedication and hard work finally came to fruition. Their unwavering commitment to this project has been instrumental and was recognised with heartfelt appreciation from everyone present.

Also in attendance were The Freyjas, an exceptional group of around 30 women known for their passionate fundraising efforts for important causes. Through their incredible generosity and determination, not only was enough money raised to fund the bench at Shoreham Academy, but also enough for two additional benches. Their sparkling energy, community spirit, and heartfelt support were felt by all.

A highlight of the morning came in the form of powerful, compassionate words from Mr Cooper, whose speech was met with admiration and warmth. His insight and sincerity resonated deeply with the audience and pupils, so much so that I started to be nervous when I was introduced and it was my turn to speak.

The assembly included an audience of possibly 200 to 300 attentive students who showed great patience and understanding throughout the event and thankfully throughout my speech. Following the speeches, the students made their way back to class, with everyone else making their way to the Bench Reveal.

More Than a Bench

The bench now stands as a visible and permanent symbol of Shoreham Academy’s commitment to mental health, a commitment that does not go unnoticed. The school’s leadership and openness in embracing such a project was praised throughout the ceremony.

With Gratitude

To Bernie and Claire the heart and soul behind this project, your passion and drive have brought something truly meaningful to life. Everything good that comes your way is thoroughly deserved.

To The Freyjas your bubbly personalities, strong character, and tireless dedication to causes like this make you true superstars.

To Shoreham Academy thank you for welcoming this initiative and demonstrating outstanding commitment to the wellbeing of your students.

To the Mind Charity, Thank you for your time effort and commitment, it is very much appreciated.

A Lasting Legacy

As students walk past the bench in the days and years ahead, they’ll see more than a place to sit. They’ll see a symbol of support, a reminder of care, and perhaps when they most need it, a path to a better tomorrow.

This is what Legend on the Bench is all about. And today, in Shoreham-by-Sea, that message was heard loud and clear.
