This bench is a bridge to cross from despair to hope, from silence to understanding, from talking to listening and from you to someone who cares.
Today wasn’t just the installation of our 80th Suicide Prevention Bench, it was a journey back through time. A return to the city where I was born, raised, shaped, and loved… Sunderland.
Standing there as the bench was revealed, pride washed over me in a way that words barely do justice. Memories of the childhood I was blessed with in my hometown collided with the emotion of installing something so meaningful in the very place that built me. It was overwhelming, in the most beautiful way.
The morning was stunning. Almost unbelievably, the sun shone down, a rare sight in Sunderland, even in summer, but despite the sunshine, the air was bitterly cold. Still, nothing could dim the warmth of what we were there to do. The reveal took place in Hetton Mini Park, a truly lovely spot that felt perfect for a bench designed to offer hope and peace.
The turnout was incredible. We were joined by members of Hetton Town Council, the Mayor Philip Dowell, the Deputy Mayor David Geddis, Andy from Andy’s Man Club, and four wonderful young players from Sunderland AFC Women—PGA players Niyah Dunbar, Annabelle Thomas, Ebony Duffy, and Chloe Paxton. They were joined by former Sunderland goalkeeper Trevor Swinburne, along with many other supporters. It was a morning filled with meaning, unity, and genuine care.
The Mayor opened the speeches with something truly powerful, using the simple word “Hello” as the heart of his message. He reminded us that Hello is the beginning of conversation… and conversation saves lives. A brilliant speech.
Next, the Deputy Mayor spoke, sharing his own experiences with Mental Health. His honesty, vulnerability, and emotion showed just how deeply mental health can touch a life, and why awareness and support are so critically important.
Then Andy’s Man Club spoke, as they always do, with sincerity and passion. Their commitment to this cause is extraordinary, and with them, Mental Health truly is in safe hands.
The representative from Sunderland AFC Women spoke on behalf of the players, and seeing young women aged 16 to 19 standing proudly for such an important issue was inspiring beyond words. Their presence gave me hope for the future.
A very special thank you must go to the Mayor and the Council for their incredible generosity in donating £500 to our charity. We are genuinely overwhelmed. Your kindness doesn’t just fund our work, it helps make the world a better, safer place. THANK YOU.
And finally, to everyone who attended the reveal… thank you. Your presence transforms these days into something unforgettable. You inspire us to do more, to reach further, and to keep fighting for those who need us most. 💙💙💙
